Have you ever driven down Magnolia Blvd. and passed the gated store flooded with chimeneas, free standing clay chimneys? Pottery and garden décor can be seen from the street view, but hidden inside Artesanos is a world of history, magic, art, and color.

Artesanos is a direct importer and seller of all Mexican furniture and accessory items ranging from folk art, lighting, mirrors, Talavera pottery, religious folk art, rustic furniture, chimeneas, and pottery. Every item is handmade or hand painted from artists and sellers in little moms and pops shops in Mexico, and then hand picked by the owners of Artesanos and brought to the store.

Once inside the store, there has to be thousands of items as small and as large as a drinking glass to a cupboard. All of the tables, dressers, and stands that hold the art in the store are made from reclaimed wood and every item is available for sale. Every inch of the store is covered including interior décor, mirrors, and paintings on the walls and lights hanging from the ceiling.

Some collections in the store are Talavera, Day of the Dead, and religious folk art. Talavera, which is usually noted by their whitish glaze, is a type of pottery originating from the city of Puebla. The only colors permitted in the art are blue, yellow, black, green, orange, and mauve, which are made from natural pigments. Artesanos carries dining sets, pottery, and accents in this beautiful earthenware.

Also popular in Mexico, and growing in the states, is the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) art. This Latin American holiday celebrates friends and family members who have died, and consists of building altars honoring their deceased loved ones, while offering gifts and throwing parties.

Artesanos carries the most famous pieces of art from this historic holiday, called La Catrinas. Meaning “The Elegant Skull,” these tall skeleton statues, appear in ornate hat fashions and long dresses to depict their wealth. It is intended to show that despite their hierarchy and importance, they are just as susceptible to death as everyone.

Along with all the beautiful pottery, and other unique artwork, lies a large collection of religious Mexican folk art. These wood, clay, and tin items depict the spiritual heritage and European influence on Mexico’s religious roots. Theses pieces are usually smaller in size and price and make a great unique gift for just about anyone.

Blush Spray Tanning

May 27, 2011

Photobucket

Don’t waste your time every day frying your skin in those torturous tanning beds, or those 60 second Mystic tans that make you look like a giant Oompa Loompa. Blush Spray Tanning has a safe, organic tan, applied according to your skin type, with aloe and oils that help hydrate and heal as you get your summer color on.

Although most tanning places or spas do airbrush tans, this particular store does airbrush and airbrush only, making them experts in the subject. This is what they do day in and day out, so they are familiar with the latest products and research, and have an impressive amount of experience.

Photobucket

The Blush Spray Tan technicians are extremely friendly and make you feel very comfortable and at home in their store. The walls are all pink and the curtains and accessories are all zebra print, making this place a wonderland for girls. Clothes and bathing suits are available to buy on a rack, as well as jewelry and hair accessories.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Blush Spray Tanning’s airbrushing method is safe and made with no chemicals. In fact, it contains about 90% aloe vera. If that’s not enough, they even highlight everyone with a hydrating oil pre-spray. This helps sooth and moisten your skin so that you will not have orange cracks in your wrists and ankles, or dry flaky patches anywhere on your body. The tan is even and fit to match your skin type, leaving an even fade, a beautiful color, and a healthy glow.

It is $30 for first timers and $40 for regulars, which is an exceptional price compared to other services, and figuring that the tan will last 7-10 days. The store also can hold parties for birthdays and bachelorettes, where you can invite your friends for tans, snacks, and even optional waxing.

If you are thinking about coming in for an airbrush tan, please exfoliate, shower, shave, wax, and do your mani and pedi before hand. The tan needs to sit for 8-11 hours, so come in loose dark clothing, and do the tan the day before whatever big event you got going on.

Appointments and walk-ins are welcome and the hours are very flexible. Come in at 10pm, get your spray on, then hit the sack and wake up bright and beautiful.

Calling all dogs! If you haven’t been too Doggie Avenue, then you haven’t lived the good life yet. This dog grooming service and boutique has all the hot trends in doggie fashion. The owner not only loves his little babies, but he will love yours too!

Each individual dog has a different coat, a different style, and a different owner, and no one knows that better than Doggie Avenue. Each dog is groomed depending on its breed, and cut however you prefer. All shampoos and conditioners are organic and sold in the store along with the grooming tools they use on site. They will even teach you their tricks and techniques so you can try it at home.

Although Doggie Avenue is only four years old, their clientele is extraordinarily large, serving people from as far away as Las Vegas, San Fransisco, and Santa Monica. Top celebrities have also become regulars at this place, including Heather Locklear and teen icon Miley Cyrus, who just recently had her puppy’s first birthday party in the store. And a couple of their customers aren’t even dogs! Some of their biggest customers just so happen to be a chicken and a goat. In fact, Doggie Avenue held a party for the chicken on Cinco De Mayo, opening their doors to 150 guests.

Not only is the grooming and customer service here superb, but the doggie boutique is one of the most impressive collections of pet items I have ever seen. Shirts, track suits, and hand made gowns line the wall to match every doggie personality. The store is always up to date on the seasons and holidays, making sure your dog is ready in their finest Halloween costume or Christmas get-up.

The boutique has anything and everything including leashes, collars, carriers, bowls, beds, toys, snacks, French bakery treats, and hand cooked gourmet food by a local vendor. The food is delivered fresh and placed in a freezer for all those picky eaters out there

The big sellers right now are the harnesses, especially made for small dogs. While leashes can bruise the trachea of petite dogs, these harnesses wrap around the chest, protecting your precious pooch. Although most of the customers are Yorkies, Maltese, Frenchies, Poodles, and Bull Dogs, Doggie Avenue isn’t just all about the little tikes, they also serve the big boys too. Leashes of every kind and color range for dogs varying from 4lbs to 200lbs.

If you’re going for the most stylish pup, you can even have a custom made crystal leash or a matching necklace for you and collar for your pet. There is nothing you can’t find or have made in this fabulous doggie boutique.

Pam MacD's Gluten Free Market

May 21, 2011

Photobucket

Pam MacD's Gluten Free Market had their ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony on May 20th, revealing the largest of its kind in Southern California. Many people came down to support the store and welcome them into the beautiful Magnolia Park district in Burbank, CA.

At 38, C.E.O and founder Pam MacDonald developed Celiac disease, an autoimmune condition that affects 1 out of every 133 people in the United States. At the time MacDonald was diagnosed, gluten-free products were almost nonexistent, and now demand is increasing and manufacturers are growing.

Gluten is a protein composite that appears in food processed from wheat, giving an elastisity to the dough and helping it rise. There are many people struggling with gluten allergies, and recent studies on autistic spectrum disorders have revealed that a gluten-free diet may be beneficial. Although most markets carry these special products, gluten-free consumers find it hard to get what they need all in one place.

Pam MacD's offers a wide selection of grocery items all under one roof, including breads, pastas, sauces, cereals, chips, ice cream, pizza, snacks, yogurt, cookies, and gourmet sandwiches and salads by executive Los Angeles caterer, Heirloom. For those who are not in need of gluten free products, there are still lots of healthy snacks for all ages. Familiar brands like Kind bars and Annie's bunnies line the shelves, as well as new and featured items like baked cheese krisps by Thin Krisps.

Their selections are wide and large, with multiple dry aisles and a frozen aisle with waffles, veggie burgers, ice cream, baked veggie sticks, and more. You can even grab some organic, gluten and soy free, vegan body products. Pam MacD's has a little of everything.

The market is simple and stylish with burgundy walls, fully stocked shelves, and a cute little coffee table and couch to relax and read up on anything gluten-free.

Burbank's Mangolia Blvd. holds the first location of this gluten-free haven, but MacDonald has big plans throughout Southern California. Come visit and enjoy some great discounts of 5% of all purchases from $50-$99.99, and 10% off $100 or more until May 31st. There are also individual sale items throughout the store and taste testings as well.
